Standing In The Gap

There are few stories from the bible as widely spoken about as the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. It is the one story that I have found is referenced commonly both inside and outside of Christian circles. Often when I've heard someone speak of it, they mentioned how unfair it was for God to destroy an entire city. It may seem unfair on the surface, but before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah He looked for someone to stand in the gap. He looked for someone who was righteous or of good character. He looked for someone who could stand between His anger at the people for living so far outside of His commands.

A part of the story includes Abraham speaking to God on behalf of the city. He asked God if He would spare the city for the sake of the righteous found there. Abraham illustrated what it was to stand in the gap. He spoke to God on behalf of those who were not in position to speak to God for themselves. God assured Abraham that He would save the city if there were righteous found there. While some choose to focus on the fact that the city was destroyed, I turn your attention to Abraham and what He did to stand in the gap.

Abraham saw that there was a need, recognized that he was in position to speak to God about the need, and immediately acted. He stood in the gap without anything to gain from the situation. God saving the city would not have political or financial gain for Abraham. He wanted God to save the city simply because if there were righteous among them saving the city would have been what was right.

Think about the things that God has placed in your path. Have you stood in the gap for someone? Have you saw a need, positioned yourself before God, and immediately acted to change the situation? Did you remove the thought of what you might gain from being of help? If you are not able to answer yes, earnestly seek God about ways that you can help. Before it is all said and done, we will all need someone to stand in the gap.

“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one."

I've Been Running From Jesus A Long Time....And I'm Not Tired Yet

I have so many fond memories from high school. There were parties, football games, tons of shopping and hanging out with friends. I can remember just how amazing it was to hold hands or share a first kiss. All of these were memories that I knew would last forever. I cherish them and do my best to recite them in my mind so that I remember them. The one memory that sticks with me without rehearsal or the smallest drop of nostalgia is the day that my friend's aunt looked me square in the eye and said "you're going to be an evangelist". She might as well have said "ready, set, go!".

That was the day that I began running away from Jesus. I put on the best pair of spiritual running shoes and ran right up outta there. I ran away from the conversation. I ran away from the church. I ran away from any and everything that looked like it might represent God. I'm going to be an evangelist???? No thank you.

Truth be told, I had no idea what an evangelist was. All I knew was that it had something to do with God or the bible or both. I was a teenager who knew about God and the bible, but what I wanted to be was free. I wanted to be free from Him speaking to me through the scriptures. I wanted to be free from Him showing me things in my dreams. I wanted to be free from the weight of visions that I didn't want or understand. So I ran.

It started out like I was trying to set the world record in the 40, but then I settled in and paced myself like a trained marathon runner. I slowed down at times. I even made sure that I could still hear God....just a little. But never, not once ever did I stop running.

I've been running from Jesus a long time..... (to be continued)

What's Your Motive?

We all have reasons for doing things. There is a reason for waking up in the morning. There is a reason for getting out of bed, walking into the restroom, and for washing your face. There is a reason for every step, every word, every thought, and every action that follows. We acknowledge that for everything there is a reason and a season, but do we ever think about our own reasons? Do we ever stop and think about what motivates us to open our eyes, get out of bed, and start the routine of our day? God indeed has His motive, but what's your motive?

What's the motive behind the things that you do? When we woke up this morning, it was at God's command. He had His blueprint for each of us long before we ever knew what it was to be alive. God's motives are pure and they will bring about a decided end. But what is it that motivates you? Are your motives influenced by the things of God or are they born and developed inside of your own desires?

A strong foundation in God is essential to being motivated by the things of God. That wasn't easy to say and for many of us it hasn' t been so easy to accomplish. For me, the difficulty has been putting aside my own fears and failures. I have struggled with seeing the value of placing myself beneath others to actually gain the view that God has. Sure, I know how to shrink myself. I have actually mastered dumbing down what it is that I know. However, I haven't allowed my eyes to be opened in such a way that I see God's reasons for my actions. I haven't allowed myself to replace my motives with His. I haven't allowed myself to be completely motivated by the gift of serving Him and His purpose.

It is said that the first step in getting over a problem is admitting you have one. My name is Candy and I have previously been unable to line all of my motives up with God's. Step one.....

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others

Come As You Are

Come as you are means
broken and bowed down
Come as you are means
being willing to stand out from the crowd

that's holding you back
that's holding you in
come as you are
don't wait to begin

A new life before you
stare your limitations in the face
If you will just come as you are
God will take over the race

He will set you on your path
He will let you know which way to go
He will hold your hand
He will be the one who shows

you how to go forward
you where to fit in
you where to stand up
you where to sit and

you where to get up
you where to back down
Come as you are
even while wearing a frown

It doesn't matter the sin you are in
It doesn't matter how bad off you think you are
It doesn't matter if you've crossed your friend
It doesn't matter if you're in the bar

Come as you are is what He's saying
Come as you are is what He means
Come as you are with no delaying
Come as you are is just what it seems

It's an invitation to His daughters
It's an invitation to His sons
It's an invitation from the Father
It's an invitation to become one

Come as you are to God the Father
Come as you are and He will touch you
Come as you are into His presence
Come as you are because He wants to

Restore your broken heart
He wants to restore your broken home
He longs to restore your failing health
God wants to restore you to His home

Come as you are when you find yourself
Stumbling and unsure of what to do
Come as you are to God the Father
And He will transform you

Broken and bowed down
is where you were, this much is true
But His love, His touch, His Spirit
will be what makes you new.
